ACTION ALERT

Before the next Los Angeles City Council Meeting Tuesday 17 November 2009

L.A. council committee favors law against declawing cats, calling it animal cruelty

There is a cat living in LA, or perhaps not yet born, who will undergo a painful surgery that often results in the cat being crippled for life. It is an operation that removes the last digit of the toe of each paw, in humans it is the last bone in our finger, our nail and our nail bed. In cats it removes their retractable claw. It deforms them like it deforms us.

Dr. Jenny Conrad D.V.M, one of our communities most dedicated vets, has made it her life’s work to end this practice. This week she needs your help.

On Friday of this week, Paul Koretz, LOHV’s successful candidate to the 5th District Council seat will ask the Los Angeles City Council to outlaw this practice.

LOHV is asking you to make 13 phone calls. Give your name, your zip code and politely ask the council member to end cat de-clawing in Los Angeles. 13 calls, 13 minutes to end a cruel practice. A ban would send a message to Sacramento and across the country that cosmetic surgeries on non-consenting pets is not tolerated by compassionate people.

If you don’t make these calls and the measure fails, future cats will have to live with the pain, you will only have to live with your conscience.

This gives you a map of the city council districts (not a great one). Locate you community on the map. If you live in the district your call is like making 10 calls. State that you are a registered voter and then go make sure you are.
